Shopping in Puerto Morelos

Alma Libre Bookstore
Alma Libre Books is the largest new & used English bookstore in the Yucatan. They have the best selection of books of local interest, such as books on local birds, fish, mammals, Mayan culture, Mexican cooking, maps, language books, as well as dictionaries and Spanish phrase books. They also have a good selection of local travel guides. Closed during low season Location: On the South side of the square   Open 10am-3pm and 6pm to 9pm., Tuesday through Saturday . Sunday open from 4pm-9pm.

Mayan Craft Market

Just a couple of blocks South of the square on Av. Rojo Gomez is a nice craft market.  I think there are probably 10-12 venders with a nice assortment of crafts. I recently heard there is a world class drum maker that sells drums in the market.

Tortilliaria

You can get a two inch stack of tortillas for about five pesos. Great with chicken from the chicken lady below. It’s about half a block toward town on Ave. Ninos Heros.

Roasted Chicken

Get a delicious whole roasted chicken for about $7-8 US. Great with guacamole and fresh tortillas.   Picolina's has them as do several other places in town or in the Colonia. Who has them varies, but they are much better tasting than what you find at home.

Casa Martin

This is the biggest store in Puerto Morelos and carries most everything; staples, produce, canned goods, cereal, paper products, drinks etc. Right on the square.

Produce

Martin's, on the town square, has a fair amount of produce and there's a produce market next to  the church on Wednesdays. If you have a car, there's also a good produce market in the Colonia on the other side of highway. The best one is called Mercesi. It is about 7 blocks east of the highway, on the other side of the powerlines on the "main" east-west road.

Fish

Fishermen go out every day except Sunday. Their catches will show up at the fish co-operative (the building with the big gates between the supermarket and El Pirata restaurant.) We've also had good luck buying fish on the dock about 4:00 when the fishermen come in. Prices are good.

Around town there are quite a few "mini-supers" that offer everything you would expect to find in a convenience store.

Restaurants in Puerto Morelos

(For those of us who'd rather not cook every night, we're lucky to have so many wonderful restaurants in our little town. Here are some of our favorites)

The Old Fisherman

South of Pelicanos.  We really like their lime soup and the fish is super fresh.

David Lau's

On the South side of the square. Great thin crust pizza and Chinese food.

Terraza

On the North side of the square. Great healthy food and vegetarian options.

People come from all over the Mayan Riviera to eat here.
