Shopping in Puerto Morelos

Alma Libre Bookstore
Alma Libre Books is the largest new & used English bookstore in the Yucatan. They have the best selection of books of local interest, such as books on local birds, fish, mammals, Mayan culture, Mexican cooking, maps, language books, as well as dictionaries and Spanish phrase books. They also have a good selection of local travel guides. Closed during low season Location: On the South side of the square   Open 10am-3pm and 6pm to 9pm., Tuesday through Saturday . Sunday open from 4pm-9pm.

Craft Market

Just a couple of blocks South of the square on Av. Rojo Gomez is a nice craft market.  I think there are probably 10-12 venders with a nice assortment of crafts.

Tortilliaria

You can get a two inch stack of tortillas for about three pesos. Great with chicken from the chicken lady below. It’s about half a block toward town on Ave. Ninos Heros.

Chicken Lady

Get a delicious whole roasted chicken for 60 pesos. Great with guacamole and fresh tortillas.  Next to dive Puerto Morelos or Polleria Juanita.

Casa Martin

This is the biggest store in Puerto Morelos and carries most everything; staples, produce, canned goods, cereal, paper products, drinks etc. Right on the square

Mama's Bakery
One block west of Playasol and one block North on Av Ninos Heros.  Baked goods can also be bought from a blue van that drives slowly through town every night at dusk.

Produce

Trucks drive around hawking their wares over their crackly roof-mounted loudspeaker. Oranges and mangos usually. Sometimes bananas, onions, pineapples and fruit you can't identify. All fresh and inexpensive. There's also a produce market at the church on Wednesdays.

Fish

Fishermen go out every day except Sunday. Their catches will show up at the fish co-operative (the building with the big gates between the supermarket and El Pirata restaurant.) We've also heard you can buy fish on the dock about 4:00 when the fishermen come in. Prices are good.

Around town there are quite a few "mini-supers" that offer everything you would expect to find in a convenience store.  This one on Rojo Gomez, closest to Playasol, even returned a 500 peso bill that I had dropped on the floor. I'm very loyal to this market.

Restaurants in Puerto Morelos

(For those of us who'd rather not cook every night, we're lucky to have so many wonderful restaurants in our little town.)

Bodos

Half a block south of Pelicanos in the Hotel Hacienda. Really nice people and wonderful German/European food.

Galleria formerly Cafe Finca

Right on the West side of Ave Rojo Gomez. Great Crepes

Marlin Bleu

Next door to the bookstore. We've heard they have great shrimp tacos.

The Old Fisherman

South of Pelicanos.  We really like their lime soup and the fish is super fresh.

David Lau's

On the South side of the square. Great thin crust pizza and Chinese food.

Spaghettino

On Rojo Gomez.

Hola Asia

On the south side of the square. One of our favorites.

Gioconda

On Rojo Gomez behind Spaghettino. Gioconda is another name for Mona Lisa.  Great pizza and atmosphere.

John Gray's Kitchen

People come from all over the Mayan Riviera to eat here.

La Pirata

Right on the square. Sometimes they have live music.
